Loft Bible
This collection demonstrates the immense variety of lofts in a wide range of buildings from all over the world. They have been converted with great ingenuity and imagination by a new breed of urban dwellers who have embraced the loft living idyll. Enthusiastically eclectic, importing ideas gathered from travel or reading, and using furniture from modern emporiums of design or found in junk shops, these loft dwellers have left the essential character and texture of their buildings intact while layering space in subtle ways so that volumetric grandeur is not lost. This tour gives the reader a glimpse of the inventiveness, vigor and pride employed in creating spectacular dwellings out of amorphous spaces.
The Magnificent Mesquite by Ken E. Rogers, ISBN 0292771053
"This book is one-of-a-kind. It is the only book that I'm aware of that summarizes the biology, ecology, uses, and management of mesquite. . . . It is the most complete book in print on mesquite."--C. Wayne Hanselka, Associate Department Head and Extension Program Leader for Rangeland Ecology and Management, Texas Agricultural Extension ServiceA reliable source of food and shelter even in the severest droughts, the mesquite tree sustained American Indians in the Southwest for centuries. Today, mesquite is popular for barbecuing, woodworking, furniture making, flooring, sculpture, jewelry, and food products ranging from honey to jelly and syrup. Even ranchers, who once fought to eradicate mesquite, have come to value its multiple uses on well-managed rangeland. In this book written especially for a general readership, one of the world's leading authorities on mesquite presents a wealth of information about its natural history and commercial, agricultural, and woodworking uses. Off-Season in the Promised Land
These poems speak to the various ways we exile ourselves from a paradise that is available at any given moment. A young girl practicing flute on the end of a pier, furniture repair, an ancient shark tooth, the deaths of friends-these are some of Makuck's subjects. His short lyrics and long narratives vary from comic to elegiac, often finding their locus in the landscapes of coastal North Carolina.
Peter Makuck is distinguished professor of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University and edits "Tar River Poetry. He has published six previous collections of poetry and received the Brockman Award for the best collection of poetry by a North Carolinian. He lives on Bogue Banks in North Carolina's barrier islands.
